Stay online when the NBN drops out, with automatic 5G & 4G backup
Reliable 5G and 4G internet backup for UniFi networks
When the internet goes down, so does everything that depends on it: EFTPOS payments, VoIP calls, cloud software, remote camera access and guest Wi-Fi. The UniFi 5G and 4G LTE range from Ubiquiti closes that gap by adding a mobile data connection that steps in automatically when your NBN or business fibre service drops out, then hands traffic back once your main line is restored.
The backup modems are built for UniFi, so there’s no third-party router to configure or extra app to learn. Adopt them in UniFi Network and you can monitor signal, data usage and connection status alongside your gateway, switches and access points.
Why add mobile backup to your UniFi network?
- Automatic failover: traffic moves to the mobile connection when your primary link drops, so you minimise downtime without anyone needing to step in.
- Flexible placement: plug into a spare UniFi PoE port anywhere on your network, then position the device where reception is strongest, with no new cable run back to your gateway.
- One-cable install: Power over Ethernet carries power and data over a single cable for a neat, professional finish.
- Bring your own SIM: choose a data plan from the provider with the best coverage at your site. The 5G models also support eSIM, and dual SIM on the 5G Max range can switch to a second provider if the first network has an outage.
- Data you control: set usage limits and use routing policies to reserve your backup link for critical traffic, such as payments and phone calls.
Choose the right UniFi 5G or 4G device
UniFi 5G Max
The flagship indoor 5G modem in the range, with peak speeds of up to 3.4 Gbps. Run it as your primary connection where fixed-line options are limited, load-balance it alongside your NBN service, or keep it on standby as backup. It offers dual SIM with eSIM support and 2.5 GbE connectivity, and desk, wall or window mounting lets you place it for the best signal.
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor
Full-performance 5G in a weatherproofed enclosure with directional antennas. Mounting it outside avoids the concrete walls, metal roofs and coated glass that weaken indoor reception, making it a smart choice for warehouses, worksites, rural properties and buildings with poor indoor coverage. Dual SIM keeps a second provider ready to take over.
UniFi 5G Backup
The most affordable 5G option in the range. This compact, PoE-powered device connects over 4G LTE or 5G RedCap, a lighter, more power-efficient form of 5G, with peak 5G speeds of up to 220 Mbps down and 120 Mbps up. It supports both nano-SIM and eSIM and is designed purely for failover, making it ideal for homes, home offices and small businesses that want peace of mind without paying for multi-gigabit performance.
UniFi LTE Backup Pro
Dependable 4G LTE failover for UniFi gateways. Insert your SIM, connect it to your network and it’s ready to keep your essentials online whenever your main connection fails.
UniFi Mobile Router range
Standalone 4G LTE routers with built-in Wi-Fi and no UniFi console required. Set them up and manage them on site over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or from anywhere with an optional Mobility Cloud subscription.
- UniFi Mobile Router: plug-and-play 4G Wi-Fi for site offices, pop-up stores, markets and events where a handful of devices need to get online.
- Mobile Router Industrial: a ruggedised, carrier-unlocked LTE Cat 4 router built for IoT deployments indoors and out, from remote cameras to sensors and digital signage.
- Mobile Router Ultra: an ultra-compact 4G router that tucks inside kiosks, vending machines and other connected equipment, with a wired WAN port for automatic failover, Wi-Fi and DC power input.
Keeping Australian businesses connected
From cafes and retailers that can’t afford EFTPOS downtime to medical practices, professional offices and home businesses that run on cloud software, UniFi mobile backup keeps the essentials online. Where a fixed line isn’t available at all, such as construction sites, temporary offices and events, the 5G Max range and Mobile Routers can provide the connection outright, coverage permitting.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a SIM card or data plan?
Yes. Each device needs an active mobile data service on a physical SIM or, for the 5G models, an eSIM. Check that your plan can be used in a third-party modem or router, as some 5G home internet plans only work with the provider’s own hardware.
Can 5G be my main internet connection?
Yes, with the UniFi 5G Max or 5G Max Outdoor, which can run as a primary connection, load-balance with another service or act as failover. The UniFi 5G Backup and LTE Backup Pro are designed for backup only. Real-world speeds depend on your provider, plan and signal strength.
Do I need a UniFi gateway?
The 5G Max range, 5G Backup and LTE Backup Pro are designed to be adopted and managed by a UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway. The Mobile Router range works independently, with no UniFi console required.
