Set up UniFi Express 7
Goal and prerequisites
Configure a UniFi Express 7, model UX7, as the primary gateway and wireless access point for a small installation. Keep its initial LAN configuration until internet and wireless operation have been verified.
The UX7 has a 10 GbE RJ45 WAN port, a 2.5 GbE RJ45 LAN port and integrated Wi-Fi. Its listed power input is USB-C, 5 V at 5 A, using the supplied adapter. It runs UniFi Network; it is not a Protect recording host. Its Ethernet port speeds are connection capabilities, not a guarantee of that internet throughput with every processing feature enabled. [1]
Have your ISP settings, the supplied power equipment, two Ethernet patch leads, a phone with the UniFi app and a wired computer ready. If more wired devices are required, add a switch to the LAN port. A separate PoE switch or suitable injector is needed to power a conventional additional AP.
Complete the initial setup
- Choose the operating role. This tutorial uses the UX7 as the primary gateway. If your intention is to add it to an existing UniFi network as an AP or mesh node, use that site's adoption workflow instead. Do not configure a second independent gateway simply because an additional wireless device is required.
- Place the unit temporarily. Put it in an open, ventilated position near the desired coverage area. Keep the device accessible while commissioning. A position beside the nbn connection box may be convenient for cabling but still unsuitable for whole-home wireless coverage.
- Connect the WAN. Attach the Ethernet handoff from the nbn connection device or modem to the labelled WAN port. Use Connecting to the nbn guide for provider-specific authentication and VDSL arrangements. Connect the computer to the 2.5 GbE LAN port, or to a switch attached there.
- Apply power and run the wizard. Use the supplied USB-C power supply. Open the UniFi mobile app near the device, select the new console and complete the on-screen setup. Set the country, time zone, owner access and site name. Enter DHCP or PPPoE details as required for your actual service. Follow the model installation guide for identifying ports and controls. [2]
- Record and review the baseline. Confirm the WAN address and internet status. Note the LAN gateway address and installed Network and UniFi OS versions. Apply needed official updates while you have a maintenance window, and wait for each restart to finish.
-
Create the main SSID. Open Network Settings › WiFi and create
Home-Main, associated with the initial LAN. Choose a strong passphrase and retain normal automatic settings to establish a baseline. Connect a current phone and an older device if available. Record each device's selected band and actual connection outcome. - Introduce Wi-Fi 7 features deliberately. Keep MLO as a separate test after normal connectivity succeeds. It requires compatible clients and enables WPA3 in UniFi's current configuration. If a legacy device fails to join, investigate its security and band support. A separate compatibility SSID can be more manageable than repeatedly changing the primary SSID during diagnosis. [3]
- Expand wired connectivity if required. Connect the LAN port to a switch with sufficient speed and port count. Add a compatible PoE source for powered endpoints. Record the negotiated uplink speed, because the switch may have a slower port than the UX7 LAN interface.
- Create guest access using Guest WiFi isolation guide. A second Wi-Fi name alone is not proof of isolation. Associate guest clients with the intended guest network and validate the access policy before sharing that password.
- Save the working configuration. Download a local configuration backup through the console's Backups controls and store it securely. Label it with the device model, date and versions. [4]
Verify coverage and performance
First test the wired computer, then test the same wireless client near the UX7 and in two distant rooms. Run three comparable tests at each location. Record the middle result, connected band and signal reading where available. Keep doors, device orientation and background downloads consistent.
If a client does not show 6 GHz, check that both its hardware and operating system support the band, that the SSID permits it and that its security configuration is compatible. Do not interpret the product's advertised coverage area as a measurement of your particular building.
Troubleshooting and recovery
If internet access fails, inspect the WAN settings before tuning Wi-Fi. If the unit reboots unexpectedly, verify the specified power equipment and ventilation. If a wireless feature change causes problems, return that setting to its recorded baseline and retest the affected client.
To return to the previous router, restore the original WAN cabling and client connections. Keep the UX7 backup for a later attempt. If you need a camera recorder, choose a separate supported Protect host rather than searching for a Protect application on this model.
